On Sept. 11, 2001, Michael Boll was a Union Township police officer when he received a statewide alert to help remove debris from the World Trade Center towers and to find people who were trapped. He responded hours later with a group of fellow police officers. “It was just complete devastation of the city and everything shut down,” said Boll, who was 31 years old at the time. “It was really surreal just going there and working on these bucket brigades and knowing just people [are] underneath you and you can’t get to them.
