On the Capitol plaza in late February, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) recounted a conversation she had that day with Katherine Clark, a Massachusetts lawmaker and the highest-ranking woman among House Democrats, about how the pair agonized over what would happen once the Supreme Court eliminated the federal right to an abortion.
From girls who had been raped being forced to carry pregnancies to term, to self-imposed travel restrictions and denying pregnant people medical treatments, such as dilation and curettage procedures, which remove tissue from the uterus, much of what Sherrill expected after the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade has happened.
“It’s amazing to me that every single awful thing we predicted is actually coming true,” Sherrill said in a recent interview with NJ Spotlight News.
A few weeks after Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled in February that frozen embryos used for in vitro fertilization are “unborn children” under state law, Sherrill said access to IVF could be the next medical right to erode. “We’re seeing now this IVF ban,” Sherrill said. “It’s really shocking to me that all the list of horrible things that we have said for decades Roe protected have come to pass so, so quickly.” To read the full story.
