On November 9, 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the investigational monoclonal antibody (MAB) therapeutic bamlanivimab for the treatment of mild-to-moderate coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in adult and pediatric patients. On November 21, 2020, the FDA issued an EUA for casirivimab + imdevimab to be administered together for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adult and pediatric patients. Both treatments, bamlanivimab and casirivimab + imdevimab, are monoclonal antibodies, which are laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s response to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses and provided the first treatment to manage COVID-19 in an outpatient setting.
