Cervical cancer is a preventable disease that disproportionately affects women in low- and middle-income countries, where nearly 87% of global cervical cancer deaths occur. In high-income countries, significant reductions in cervical cancer burden have been achieved through comprehensive preventative efforts including primary prevention with human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, secondary prevention with screening, treatment of precancerous lesions, as well as access to advanced treatment modalities such as radiation therapy. Improvements in such health system infrastructure with a focus on prevention has been shown to greatly reduce morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer. To read the full article.
