High Performance Computing

Rutgers Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) provides strategic leadership in advancing Rutgers University’s research and scholarly achievements through advanced research computing (also known as high performance computing, or HPC), data science, and advanced networking in partnership with the Office for Research, the Office of Information Technology, and the academic and research communities across all campuses.

OARC Resources

Resource Description
Amarel Cluster In July 2017, the Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC)  unveiled Amarel, a “condominium” style computing environment developed to serve the university’s wide-ranging research needs.  The Amarel cluster provides a shared platform that optimizes resources for the benefit of all users.  Named in honor of Dr. Saul Amarel, one of the founders of the Rutgers Computer Science Department and contributor to advanced computing and artificial intelligence research and methodologies, Amarel is designed to suit many different research applications.
Caliburn

At the time it was built in 2016, Caliburn was the most powerful supercomputer system in the state. It was built with a $10 million award to the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2) from the New Jersey Higher Education Leasing Fund (ELF), and was conceptualized, architected, and managed by RDI2 until 2019. Now managed and maintained by OARC, Caliburn is a statewide system benefiting all of New Jersey and enabling research both locally and globally.

Data Storage Accessibility-focused data storage: Amarel GPFS Storage is distributed across CICnet, the Rutgers research network. Amarel owners may purchase project storage consistent with research needs.
CIC Net CICNet is a Rutgers-provided, state-wide, multi-campus, distributed HPC and storage, fast, low-latency network that is part of global Science DMZs.
GIS Through consultations and workshop training sessions, OARC helps scholars use GIS tools and software, data resources, analysis and visualizations to complement their research.
