Dr. Sonnenberg serves as Informatics Lead for the New Jersey Alliance for Clinical and Translational Science (NJ ACTS). He is the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) and Professor of Medicine at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). As CMIO, Dr. Sonnenberg was responsible for transition of the faculty practice of the medical school from paper records to a completely electronic paperless electronic health record. He led the successful efforts of the medical school to achieve Meaningful Use under the federal EHR incentive programs beginning with the first year of eligibility in 2011. He is currently leading the school’s adoption of the Medicare Incentive-Based Payment System (MIPS) specified by the Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). In addition to these activities, Dr. Sonnenberg serves on two of the core committees that are establishing the Rutgers Health Group, the enterprise-wide faculty practice of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences . As professor of medicine, Dr. Sonnenberg practices primary care internal medicine at RWJMS.
Dr. Sonnenberg trained in primary care internal medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles and completed a fellowship in clinical decision-making and medical applications of computer science at the New England Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine. . He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. He has previously served as editor-in-chief of the journal Medical Decision Making and is a past-president of the Society for Medical Decision Making. He has been recipient of FIRST and Research Career Development Awards from the National Library of Medicine and two RO1 grants from NIH. He has served on numerous NIH ad hoc study sections and is currently chair of the Biomedical Library Informatics Review Committee (BLIRC), the standing study section of the National Library of Medicine at NIH. He is holder of a US Patent for HGML- a Hypertext Guideline Markup Language. He is a member of the inaugural class (2013) of Health IT fellows of the Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT and serves on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
Dr. Sonnenberg’s translational science interests focus on the informatics involved in clinical decision support and in capturing usable research data from multiple clinical sources. He led the GE Centricity EMR demonstration site for the AHRQ-funded Clinical Decision Support Consortium in which decision rules at a remote server hosted by Partners Healthcare in Boston were executed for patients from within the GE Centricity EMR located in New Jersey. He is currently leading projects to use the EHR to implement N-of-1 clinical trials and to improve the management of hypertension in the faculty practice.
